Paul Lake
July 27-August 4, 2006

Well we have decided to hit Paul Lake again this year.  Last year the fishing was so good on Paul, that we really didn't get a chance to fish Ethel as much as we wanted and we didn't even check out Raff Lake.

Once again the fishing was amazing in Paul...we caught fish everywhere.  This year the fish were a little deeper then last year.  They were in the 6-8 foot range.  No monsters were caught, but we did have a few good follows and a couple of bites offs that were frustrating, but such is life.  We mainly fished spoons for Pike.  For the walleye it was worm/bait harnesses and Rapalas.  Plus of course your standard jigs.  Orange and white grubs were the colour of choice for the fish this year.

This year George flew us in a day early, which was sweet.  He had to pick up his workers, as they were building a new dock for Paul Lake.  So we went in on the Thursday instead of the Friday.  On the flight in I got to fly the plane for a few minutes, that was an experience in itself.

Weather was fairly stable, and there was no fire ban, so each night we burnt as much of the old dock as we could.  Had some great camp fires let me tell you.  We did have 1 day where it was extremly cold for the night.  It was so cold that there was steam coming off the lake, and so much of it, it started getting tough to navigate the boat.  There were a couple of thunderstorms, but they were all at night, so we didn't lose any fishing time.  1 storm was so strong it woke us at 2am, and with the lightning you could see the other end of the lake.

On the last day we decided to take the trip to Raff Lake, which we were told was a medium strength trail and would take 45mins to walk to.  Well let me tell you that it ain't medium, but a tough trail to walk.  It took us over an hour to walk it, as there are tons of hills and rocks that you can go ass over tea kettle.  Once we made the hike the lake was well worth it.  After waiting for a minor storm to pass us we bailed out the boat, (it looked like about a month's worth of water in there).  The fishing was fast and furious.  Raff lake has Northern Pike and some perch.  The only reason why we know there are perch is that we hooked into a pike and then all we ended up with on hour spoon was a Perch that was sliced on it side from the pike.  We released the perch, but my geuss is that it became lunch anyways.  Between the 2 of us that made the trek, we caught about 30+ pike in  a couple of hours.  What a ton of fun.  The walk back was uneventful but wet.

The cabin was the same, nice and cool at night, so it was easy to sleep, but it could get warm during the day.  We did have 1 additional geust in the cabin, a red squirrel that decide to knaw through the screen and wake us up fairly early.  It was amusing to watch Danielle chase it out with a broom.  Boy can that thing sqawk.

The flight home was uneventful, but always beautiful, and sad to point, knowing that our vacation was over, and the long drive home was about to start.

I would definately recommend this lake to anyone hitting Air Ivanhoe in the years to come.
